Outbound learning in Indian perspective
The concept of Outbound Learning or learning with experience exists in our history and mythology. Young Krishna was sent to wilderness school ‘Sandeepani’ and Rama with his brother were consigned to the forest under the guidance of a Guru called Viswamitra. Another example is of ‘Pandavas’ where 13 years of wandering in the wilderness, taught them the art and tactics of winning a war. The wildernesses have taught them balanced judgments, objectivity with empathy, compassion and fairness. For ages the belief persists that physical exertion and pain, living together in strange settings among strangers will help to overcome biases, resistances, prejudice and induce compassion, empathy and tolerance to manage differences.

Team Building
Team Building is the process of improving collective performance.
A simple but effective methodology involves:
1) Establishing ownership of shared goals
2) Removing inhibitions / blockages to achievement of those goals
3) Introducing enablers (awareness, resources, information, processes, etc.) to help achieve those goals
4) Using team building processes (e.g.: health checks, performance management, 360 feedback) in the correct sequence to gradually raise performance, like climbing a ladder one step at a time
The foundation of good teamwork is having a shared commitment to common objectives. Without this, all other forms of team building will have a limited impact. Therefore, before using any team building exercises and activities, or embarking on other forms of team building, we need to understand this foundation of shared commitment in place by:
1. Clarifying the team goals, and building ownership/commitment to those goals across the team.
2. Identifying any issues which inhibit the team from reaching their goals, and removing the inhibitions.
3. Putting in place enablers to help the goals be achieved to higher standards.
